8 Days Bird and Primate Watching –Murchison Falls and Kibale

This safari lets you discover and explore what nature has in stock in “The Pearl of Africa”. Kibale Forest and Murchison Falls National Parks are some of Uganda’s highly stocked destinations when it comes to Primate and Birdlife. Kibale is Africa’s number one destination for primate tracking especially Chimpanzees with over 1500 individuals and 13 primate species in total. Birdlife is prolific with over 372 species including restricted range endemics all of which is attributed to rich forest ecosystem.

Murchison Falls on the other hand is home to over 451 bird species seen on game drives and launch trips; in the south is Budongo Forest an extension to the park hosting primates like Chimpanzees in Kaniyo Pabidi as well as others like Olive Baboons, Black and White Colobus, Vervets, Potto, Blue Monkeys and Bush-babies among others.

    Detailed Tour

    Airport arrival and pick-up

    Welcome to the Pearl of Africa! On the day of arrival, your guide will be waiting for you at Entebbe International Airport. Receive a warm welcome and then you will be transferred to the hotel in Kampala where you will have your overnight stay.

    Accommodation: Sheraton hotel (luxury)/ Cassia lodge (midrange)/ Ivy’s Hotel (basic). Bed and Breakfast

    Day 01: Depart to Kibale Forest National Park [Approximately 6hours drive]

    Begin with an early breakfast at the hotel and then we hit the road on a journey westwards to Fort Portal town. This route is scenic and you will set eyes on the rolling lush tea estates, you will have your lunch break in town and later have a short site seeing experience taking in the beautiful views of the region dotted with raised peaks and backdrop of the block Rwenzori Mountains. Continue to your accommodation where you will have dinner and overnight.

    Day 02: Primate tracking and bird watching

    Have an early breakfast, go to Kanyanchureception area for registration, briefing and commence tracking of Chimpanzees. This forest ecosystem is rich in primate life; therefore on this ritual, expect to come across a number of them. On finding these delightful Apes, you will utilize your one hour looking at them display, swinging in canopies with their pant-hooting calls. Retreat after the walk back to the lodge for lunch and relaxation; In the afternoon, go for another forest experience looking-out for the bird variety including; Dusky Crimsonwing, Crowned Eagle, Abyssinian Ground-Thrushamong others.

    Day 03: Birding in Bigodi sanctuary; head to Hoima [Approximately 5hours]

    Go for an early morning nature walk around Bigodiwetland after breakfast. The 3hours guided walk through the 8km wildlife sanctuary leads you past the board pathways; the site is a paradise of birds with over 200species expect to see the; Ross’andGreat Blue Turacos, Kingfishers, Cranesand many swamp endemics, keep eyes open for the resident primates. In the afternoon, head in for a drive Northwards to Hoima where you will have your overnight.

    Day 04: Transfer to Murchison Falls and have an Evening launch trip

    Embark on a scenic drive after breakfast proceeding through Masindi to the park. Check-in at the booked lodge, relax here and have lunch in the late afternoon we go for a lunch trip along the Nile from Paraa upstream to the bottom of the astonishing falls. Keep your eyes open for the wildlife and birds along the shoreline on this sundowner trip. A visit to the top of the falls is stunning presenting you the best safari Kodak memories.

    Day 05: Launch trip and birding at the delta, Evening game drive

    Enjoy breakfast at the lodge, go for a luxurious birding trip on a morning launch trip downstream to the Delta; lookout for the African Open billed-stork, Kingfishers and many others. On the delta, search for the rare and sought after prehistoric Shoebill Stork. In the afternoon after a lunch break, search for more birds especially the savanna species on a game drive also having sights of the great game including Buffalo herds, African Elephant, Hartebeests and others.

    Day 06: Chimpanzee tracking and Birding in Budongo Forest Reserve

    Have breakfast and depart early enough South of the park to Budongo Forestfor a morning Chimpanzeetracking session in Kaniyo Pabidi sector. On this ritual, you will come across other primates like; Blue Monkeys, Olive baboons, Black and White Colobus, Vervets.. expect to see a number of birds on the nature walk. In the late afternoon, go for a bird watching session along the Royal Mile walking under the towering canopy. This activity will reward you with beautiful sights and sounds of nature. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

    Day 07: Transfer to Entebbe [Approximately 6hours drive]

    Relax at  your breakfast, checkout later from the lodge and drive to Entebbe via the  pleasant plains of Nakasongola. En-route, we shall breakoff to the wilds of Ziwa to track the White Rhinos the  sanctuary host many bird species that you will come across. Lunch will be here  and then we move onward to Entebbe arriving in the evening.

    Day 08: Birding in Mabamba and Fly-out

    An early start with breakfast and transfer west of Entebbe to Mabambawetland located in Kasanjje for a signoff birding activity. The bird on your mind here should be the Shoebill Storka prehistoric looking bird. Search for the birds on a local canoe peddled by a local skipper who know every corner of the wetland. Keep your eyes open for the African Marsh Harrier, White-winged Terns, Pied Kingfisher, Ospreyamong others including migratory species from Europe. Return to the lodge for lunch, refresh, and checkout and then be driven to the airport for your flight back home.
